Hi Mel. I affirmed long ago when I rejected 'faith' for 'non-faith' and with that, was able to cut through the prejudice and see the real human being inside the (religious and racial) packaging). There is a huge difference between "Muslim people" or "Christian people" and "people who were brought up to be Muslim" and "People wo were brought up to be Christian", recognisign as Dawkins said, people are not born religious. They are brought up in the faith of theri community.
Of course that creates a raft of questions about myths and rituals and how they divide and control people but we haevn't time for long learned discussions. So, we go with whatever turns you on!
We urgently need, as a species to turn our backs on difference and face the imminent threat of climate change. If we don't, it will very soon cause so much conflict, as they say, 'you ain't seen nuthin' yet!'
thank you for sharing this video and link! powerful, important stuff.
my daughter started public school this year and they have a program called the purple hand pledge which the children recite every morning: "I will not use my hand or my words for hurting myself or others." they even offered t-shirts to wear for Mondays and my daughter reminds me every monday morning "it is purple hand day." on the one hand (no pun intended) i am glad for the reinforcement to practice nonharming; but it also saddens me to realize teaching such principles has come down to the schools and a t-shirt. still, for our family, it was a great way to talk about and reinforce compassion and nonharming.
